Fish out of Water

August 4th ~ Day 3

We woke late in the morning with nothing in particular planned for the day. We decided to put on our swim suits and go to the beach for a dip in the Gulf. We splashed around for a while but decided that our time would be better spent just laying on the sand, allowing the waves to wash over us, so that’s what we did. The water was nice and cool, and the time we spent there was a welcome respite from the oppressive heat and humidity. As we laid there we would occasionally see schools of what looked like hundreds of tiny fish swimming all around us, fearless as long as we remained still. It was amazing.

We had heard some other guests talking about the Hard Rock Cafe they had found in the town of San Miguel not far from the hotel, so that quickly became our next destination. We got a taxi and embarked on a brief but terrifying ride through crowded Mexican streets riddled with pedestrians and scooters piled high with kids, where the only rule regarding right of way seems to be that it goes to whichever vehicle is biggest. We arrived at the Hard Rock Cafe, and went inside to enjoy the first “real food” we’d had in a while. We feasted on bacon cheeseburgers and salt-and-pepper-laden fries while listening to the tender strains of Nirvana and Ozzy Osbourne.

We went to the beach to watch the sunset and wade in the water, then we called it a day.
