Fine Fare
August 7th, 2002 ~ Day 6 ~ Continued
We showered and changed into our best formal wear in preparation for dinner at La Fuente, the hotel’s ritzy Italian restaurant. We had, as part of our all-inclusive package, received a voucher for dinner there, and had made our reservation for 9 o’clock. We arrived at the restaurant a little early, Kristina in a beautiful ivory dress and me in long pants and socks for the first time. The restaurant was housed in an actual building, with doors and windows that remained closed, creating a true distinction between “inside” and “outside”. We went “inside”, and left the bees “outside”. We were seated at a small table by a window, so we could watch the festivities going on outside while we dined in air-conditioned semi-private romantic comfort. Our waiter, a not-quite-elderly Mafia-esque man with a folded napkin draped over his arm, filled our glasses with icy-cold water from a silver pitcher that was glistening with condensation. The atmosphere of the restaurant was wonderful - all dark and gloomy but subtly and attractively lit with wall sconces and candles on the tables. There was a salad bar with a small variety of items, but everything that I had was quite tasty and full of rich Italian flavor. The menu featured a choice of a beef, chicken, or pork entree with a choice of soup, and a selection of dessert items. We each ordered the beef, which was a tenderloin stuffed with minced bacon and mushrooms, then topped with richly flavored slices of what I guessed to be portabello mushrooms. It was excellent.
For dessert we each had the tiramisu, which was fairly good, but left a little to be desired. It was kind of clumpy and gelatinous, instead of light and airy and lady-fingery like I’m accustomed to. Despite this minor stumble, La Fuente came through in fine form and became a highlight of our trip.
After dinner, we returned to our room looking forward to relaxing and watching a movie. We had brought my laptop computer and a selection of DVD movies to watch, and had up to this day had trouble with the laptop’s sound output. But through a little fiddling around with the Infernal Contraption earlier in the day, I managed to get the sound to work again, so we ended up spending the rest of the evening watching Tommy Boy and sipping on margaritas, planning to get up early in the morning to watch the sunrise.
