Back Again, Back Again, Jiggity-Jig

Yep, it’s been a while, but here we are again.

It may seem odd to some cyber-savvy uber-dorks, but real life does on occasion get in the way of blogging, even on a low-rent blog like this one. We’ve all been pretty busy as of late - in a good way. Mark has been keeping me busier than a one legged man in one of those contests you’ve heard about. We’ve been renting apartments and getting tenants moved in just as fast as we can, at what I believe is safe to call an all-time record pace.

So. Family blogging has fallen by the wayside, and I do apologize to those who long for updated photos and stories of the kids/grandkids. We’ll try to get some recent stuff posted up here in the coming days.

For instance:

Merry Christmas, You Sons ‘a Guns!

Ahh, yes.

Here I sit, listening to George Winston’s December and Linus and Lucy albums as they stream through the aether to my computer, countless bits of paper and packaging and wire twisty ties and whatnot strewn all over the front room, browsing through the couple hundred Christmas season photos I’ve taken thus far.

I’d say it’s about time to share some, wouldn’t you?

We spent Sunday evening at Mark and Sharon’s house and got to see Joni and Javi and Jeff and Sarah and their respective new kiddos Cameron and Seth.

Cameron’s a real ham for the camera and Seth is just a dang good looking kid with big blue eyes.

Then we had Christmas Eve dinner at my Grandparents’ house and had a good time chowing down on roast beef and opening presents. I actually didn’t end up taking too many photos there, but I got a couple of good shots of Isabella reading The Night Before Christmas.

IMG_1337.JPG
Now an aside: Lately I’ve been reading a lot about off-camera flash photography, and have gotten some cheap speed lights and stands and some wireless flash triggers to boot. I decided that this year I wanted our Christmas-morning photos to actually, oh I don’t know… Ah. Oh yes. I wanted them to look good. So I spent a little time last night setting up two strobes on stands in the corners of the room opposite the Christmas tree, aimed them at the ceiling, took a few test shots, and got everything ready to take Christmas morning photos with as little thought as possible.

Kristina and I both stayed up fairly late, but still didn’t manage to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus when he visited our house. Next time I’ll rig up some motion detectors to my camera and catch him in the act.

So this morning, our ambulatory kids came and woke us up bright and early. We donned our comfy robes and pajamas and whatnot, and headed to the front room to find what Santa had brought, and made a huge mess opening presents and assembling toys.

David got his first real bicycle and Isabella got her very own MP3 player, complete with about ten different Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson albums (amongst others) courtesy of her dear old dad.

All that remains now is our epic journey to Oklahoma to spend some time with some of Kristina’s family, and our Christmas season for this year will come to an end.

More photos are available in the photo albums.

2 Months, 1 Week

IMG_1193.JPG
Kristina called me into the bathroom tonight while she was giving Claire a bath.  Claire was laying on her stomach and looking all around and just generally, unavoidably, being cute.

It’s not that she’s just now holding her head up or anything, it’s just that she’s getting more comfortable being on her stomach without getting irritable.  Between that and the kicking, I’d say she’s going to be a right fine crawler when the time comes.

Flag Duty

Isabella was one of several kids at school that recently got chosen to raise and lower the flags before and after school each day. She attended a quick little training session one day, and finally got to do her job last week.

I just had to get her to school about ten minutes early each day, and make sure she didn’t let the flag touch the ground. The boy that was helping her didn’t seem to think it was so important though, so I had to tell him that if he let the flag touch the ground we’d have to set him on fire as well as the flag. That seemed to do the trick.

I’m pretty sure he knew I was kidding. Most likely, anyway.

Deck the Halls, Already

IMG_0628.JPG
Isabella played her Christmas recital today*. She played Deck the Halls pretty much flawlessly.

Since I’m not a very good dad and generally no good in other areas as well, I failed to catch the first few notes of her performance in the video. I was watching really closely for some sort of visual cue like a nod from her teacher or something that would signal that she was about to begin, but there was none. I think Isabella and her teacher must have worked out some sort of secret signal only perceivable by them in the hopes of foiling any would-be videographer’s hopes of recording her performance in its entirety.

So anyway. Below is what I got video-wise, and there are photos as well.

Afterwards we went to Olive Garden with Mom and Sam, as is our wont and tradition following a recital.

* Yeah, it’s the latter half of November, which these days makes it a little late for a Christmas recital, but what can you do?

Claire’s First Bath

IMG_0602.JPG
It’s about time.

Claire’s little umbilical stump evidently realized it was no longer needed or even wanted anymore, and so finally threw in the towel and took off for greener pastures.  The benefits here are two-fold: For Claire, it means she no longer has a vestigial piece of dried body part hanging around anymore (which is surely always a good thing).  For us, it means we can finally give her her first real bath in an appropriately sized tub.

That’s Knot Funny

Sometimes kids are funny. They can so intensely focus on what we big people might consider the most trivial of things, while at the same time forgetting to pay attention to what might be considered slightly more important. Things like, oh I don’t know, putting your hands out in front of you so as to avoid smashing your face into the ceramic tile floor, for example.

I only bring it up because tonight David did just that. I watched him do it. He ran into the kitchen to pick up some playing cards he had scattered around, began a crouching maneuver upon arriving at the site of the strewn cards, and was doing quite well. However, he failed to stop the crouching maneuver after the appropriate amount of crouchness had been achieved, and proceed to plant himself face first in the middle of the kitchen floor.

So right now he looks like Rocky after the first good hit from Apollo Creed.

I think my new f/1.8 lens really captures the true essence of a head injury.

David’s Third Birthday

David's 3rd BirthdayIt’s official. According to David anyway. He’s now a Big Boy.

We had a bunch of family and friends over for a short time of birthday festivities including balloons, cake and ice cream, and of course a veritable flood of presents ranging from this set gears and cranks for smartifyin’ himself with, to a big ole honkin’ Tonka firetruck with a wicked cool extension ladder.

The party didn’t start until 7:00 in order to allow people to get off work and have dinner and whatnot before coming over. And since it was a school night, most everyone had to leave by around 8:30, so it was indeed un soiree vitesse.

After everyone left and shortly before bedtime, David and I built this super-cool firetruck carwash complete with spinning brushes and water sprayers.

I’ve put up some more recent photos of Claire…just because…

Just because.

There are more in her photo album.

Well that passed.

Halloween has come and gone, and man, do we have a ton of candy. Holy geez. We have a lot of candy.

The reason is as follows, in a round-about way:

Before Claire was born, we knew that she was developing normally and appeared to be quite healthy. And she was. We were expecting to stay in the hospital for one or two nights and come on home, as we did when David was born. Then of course, that plan went right out the window.

So. I am fortunate in my work that I am able to take off as needed for family emergencies and whatnot. That’s one of the benefits of having a family business. We can all sort of pull together to cover for someone when they need it, without rocking the ship too much. So when Claire ended up having to stay in NICU for a week, Kristina and I of course ended up staying in the hospital for that week as well. Then we still had that little period of time when you come home with a new baby where you just sort of have to get back into your rhythm and figure out how to take care of another whole person while making sure your other kiddos aren’t lost in the shuffle.

All in all, I missed about ten days of work. So I have had a lot of stuff to catch up on. The bulk of that has been paperwork: paying bills, getting the books up to date, entering rent payments in the computer and whatnot. The rest of it has been some maintenance issues at the apartments, one of which I had to get finished today.

I was hoping to get home early enough in the afternoon to finish carving our other two pumpkins, run by the store to pick up some candy and some tea-light candles, and perhaps even build a height-restrictive barrier to keep taller kids (i.e. adults) from advancing all the way to our door for candy.

DSCF6316.JPG
Most of that didn’t happen. I got my work done in reasonable time, but with no time left for pumpkin carving or barricade building. I hit the road for home, hoping to get there in time to load up Kid 1 and Kid 2 to take to various and sundry grandparents’ houses for presentation, and I was on track to do so. I really was doing pretty good on time. So good, in fact, that I got cocky and decided to stop at the Sooper Dooper Kay-Mart for candy and candles.

That was my downfall. (Mental note: Never go to a Sooper Dooper X-Mart on the day of, or the day before, a holiday.) I grabbed a bag full of tea-light candles, about eight or so bags of candy, and hurried up to wait in line at one of the two functional cash registers.

DSCF6309.JPG
Thirty minutes later I was back in the truck on the way home, and pulled into the driveway at about ten after six, whereupon Kristina told me that the whole Halloween plan was falling apart: David had, as kids will, unexpectedly thrown up all over his cowboy outfit, and was pretty much done for as far as trick-or-treating was concerned, and everything else was yet to be decided. Isabella ditched the Miss America outfit and went for a creepier look. However, before all that happened, Kristina had gone to the store and also bought a few bags of candy for the impending trick-or-treaters. So I think we’ve got like twenty pounds of candy in the house right now.

DSCF6313.JPG
We called the various grandparents and told them we wouldn’t be coming by after all. I set our three pumpkins out on the porch and lit them up. Kristina took Isabella trick-or-treating up and down the street real quick like, then went to the video store for a movie, and we spent the rest of the evening inducing diabetic comas in giving candy to all kinds of folks in all kinds of costumes, and watching bits and pieces of Meet the Robinsons.

So that passed. Kids are in bed. Hopefully by morning David will be feeling better and Isabella will have reestablished a healthy insulin level in her bloodstream.
